Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 29, 2010… BMW of North America today announced that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) declared the 2011 BMW 5 Series Sedan a 2010 Top Safety Pick. The new 5 Series earned the top rating of “Good” based on its performance in each of the Institute’s crash tests.

Receiving the 2010 Top Safety Pick for the 2011 BMW 5 Series Sedan is one of numerous awards BMW has earned from the IIHS over the years. In fact, as a result of tests conducted in 2008, the 2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan, as well as the X3 and X5 Sports Activity Vehicles® earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick.

BMW Group Announces Six-Year Partnership with United States Olympic Committee

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 26, 2010... BMW Group announced today it will be the Official Mobility Partner of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) from now through 2016. BMW Group will also be the Official Mobility Partner of four National Governing Bodies (NGBs): USA Bobsled & Skeleton, US Speedskating, USA Swimming and USA Track & Field.

Jack Pitney, Vice President of Marketing for BMW of North America, USOC Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Baird and short track speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno, the most decorated U.S. winter Olympian of all time, were all in New York City to make the partnership announcement.

This multi-million dollar agreement goes beyond financial support to also provide the USOC with fundraising opportunities and the four individual NGBs with BMW Group technical expertise. BMW Group will use its experts, deep technology base and facilities to help the Olympic and Paralympic Teams improve their training and performance. An example of this has been the company’s work with BMW ORACLE Racing to improve its performance. BMW Group’s expertise in light weight construction and aerodynamics helped the BMW Oracle Racing Team design a technically advanced yacht that won the America’s Cup sailing competition this year.

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Lime Rock Park Preview

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 21, 2010... The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team has arrived in Lakeville, CT, for the July 24th Round 5 of the 2010 American Le Mans Series. The Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park will begin this Saturday at 2:05pm Eastern Time and will be broadcast live on SPEED Television.

With five podium finishes in the first four races of the season, BMW now leads the GT Manufacturer points race. BMW M3 GT co-drivers Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner, along with Joey Hand and Dirk Müller, stand third and fourth in GT Driver points, respectively.

A proper integration of aerodynamics, suspension, powertrain, and tires is credited for the M3 GT’s tremendously high cornering speeds and stable, balanced handling behavior. Below are some details of the incremental improvements made by the team to some of the most highly-technical areas of development since the summer of 2009.

BMW Nameplate Ranking High Above Industry Average.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 20th, 2010... The BMW 3 Series and 5 Series Sedans were ranked highest by J.D. Power & Associates in their respective categories in the 2010 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study. This prestigious award is given to models with high sales, high customer satisfaction rates, and little or no need for cash incentives. The BMW 3 Series was ranked highest in the Entry Premium Car segment, and the BMW 5 Series was ranked highest in the Midsize Premium Car segment. The BMW 1 Series was first runner-up in the Entry Premium Car segment behind the 3 Series Sedan.

Additionally, the BMW nameplate was ranked very high among automakers. The stated industry average nameplate ranking by J.D. Power & Associates was 778 out of 1000 points, while BMW came in at 846 points, a score which places BMW above its primary competitors and third among all automakers in the study.

The APEAL Study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of more than 80 vehicle attributes. The 2010 APEAL Study is based on responses gathered between February and May 2010 from more than 76,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year cars and trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of ownership.

Management Changes at BMW of North America and BMW Group Financial Services Americas

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 16, 2010… Today, the BMW Group announced two changes within its senior management team in North America effective September 1.

Wayne Orchowski, currently Vice President, Eastern Region, BMW of North America, will assume the role of Vice President, Operations North America, and Chief Operating Officer, BMW Group Financial Services Americas. In his new role, Orchowski will have overall leadership responsibility for the BMW Group Financial Services Regional Service Center in Ohio, as well as continuing to deliver operational excellence to over 1,200 dealers and 900,000 lease and loan customers across the U.S. and Canada.

Jack Pitney, currently Vice President, Marketing BMW Brand, BMW of North America, will succeed Orchowski as Vice President, Eastern Region. In this new function, Pitney will assume the overall leadership role for all sales, marketing, after-sales and dealer-development activities in the 12 state Northeast region, which encompasses 93 BMW and 24 MINI dealers and includes the New York metro area. With a sales volume of over 75,000 new vehicles a year, the Northeast is BMW of North America’s largest region in the U.S. Pitney’s successor as head of BMW Brand Marketing in the U.S. will be announced by September 1.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 14, 2010... In 2004 BMW introduced a new concept to the market: A small, premium Sports Activity Vehicle with all-road capability and unparalleled driving dynamics. This first generation BMW X3 became a best seller in the BMW line...both in the United States and in Europe. Through its life cycle, over 600,000 original X3s have been sold worldwide with 150,000 sold in the USA. Subsequently, several competitors have entered the now hotly contested segment.

The new second generation BMW X3 builds on the success of the original by developing its core competencies, while adding new technology to establish new benchmarks for agility, efficiency and comfort. The new BMW X3 will be produced in an expansion of the BMW Spartanburg, South Carolina plant and is expected to arrive in U.S. BMW Centers by the end of 2010.

Design: Exterior
The design of the new BMW X3 conveys elegance, agility and ruggedness. Up front, the forward-slanting BMW kidney grille and large headlight assembly combine with a powerful-looking front apron and hood, boasting six contour lines sweeping down to meet at the kidney grill, giving the X3 a bold presence. The twin round headlights, combined with the round fog lamps, form the triangular light pattern that is characteristic of the BMW SAV design. The upper edge of the headlight assembly sports an accentuating chrome trim, creating the focused design typical of BMW vehicles. BMW's signature ''Corona Rings'' are again illuminated to function as the daytime running lights. When equipped with the optional Xenon headlights, the Corona Rings and daytime running lights are illuminated by bright white LEDs.

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Takes Lead in ALMS GT Manufacturer’s Championship

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 12, 2010… With second- and fourth-place GT class finishes in yesterday’s Utah Grand Prix, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team has raced BMW to the top of the GT Manufacturer point standings after four rounds of competition in the 2010 American Le Mans Series.

Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner, co-driving the No. 92 M3 GT, finished 14 seconds behind the winner in the two-hour-and-forty-five-minute contest, continuing this season’s BMW-RLR podium streak. Joey Hand and Dirk Müller finished fourth in the No. 90 M3 GT, losing a third-place finish in the closing minutes of the race, as a damaged exhaust reduced the BMW’s power.

Auberlen and Milner’s third podium finish of the year leapfrogs them ahead of teammates Hand and Müller to third in GT driver points. Hand and Müller stand fourth.

Megacity Vehicle to become the world’s first volume-produced car with a passenger cell made from carbon.
Vehicle LifeDrive architecture sets benchmark in lightweight design. Electric motor to be developed and produced in-house.

Munich. The BMW Group is once again breaking new ground with the Megacity Vehicle (MCV), due to come onto the market in 2013: “The Megacity Vehicle is a revolutionary automobile. It will be the world’s first volume-produced vehicle with a passenger cell made from carbon. Our LifeDrive architecture is helping us to open a new chapter in automotive lightweight design. Indeed, this concept allows us to practically offset the extra 250 to 350 kilograms of weight typically found in electrically powered vehicles,” says Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management for Development.

“The drive system remains the heartbeat of a car, and that also applies to electric vehicles,” said Draeger. “Powertrains also remain a core area of expertise of Bayerische Motoren Werke. Electromobility and the hallmark BMW driving pleasure make an excellent match, if you go about things the right way. For this reason we are developing the powertrain for the Megacity Vehicle in-house – that includes the electric motor, the power electronics and the battery system.””

The electrification of a vehicle requires new concepts in vehicle architecture and body construction in order to exploit the potential of the new emission-free drive system to optimum effect. With the revolutionary LifeDrive concept, the BMW Group engineers are developing the car’s architecture from scratch and adapting it to the demands and conditions of future mobility. The goal: to offset the additional weight of an electric vehicle – typically 250 to 350 kilograms. To this end, the BMW Group is focusing on the innovative high-tech material carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).

BMW Group retail grows 13.1% in first half-year

Double-digit growth at BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce again in June Rolls-Royce sells more cars than ever before Positive sales trend continues in Motorcycles segment

Munich. The BMW Group has ended the first half-year with substantial growth in sales. A total of 696,026 (prev. yr. 615,454) BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles were delivered to customers worldwide in the first six months of the year – an increase of 13.1%. In June, sales volumes rose 12.2% to 143,157 (prev. yr. 127.556) vehicles. The company made gains in virtually all markets during the first half-year, with sales in China, the American and European markets in particular reporting the strongest growth. On the product side, the BMW X1, 5 Series GT and Z4 models, together with the BMW 7 Series, were among the main growth drivers in the first half of the year. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan also got off to a strong start – roughly 25,000 models have already been sold since its European launch in mid-March.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing: “In some cases, the automobile markets are recovering much faster than expected. We had a successful first half-year with retail growth of 13.1%, and were able to maintain our position as the world’s leading premium manufacturer.” Robertson added, “We aim to continue this upward trend in the second half of the year. Besides the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, a large number of new models, including the new BMW 5 Series Touring, the new BMW X3, and the MINI Countryman, will help us achieve this.”

The company reported sales growth in almost all regions and all automobile markets in the first half of the year. In Europe, deliveries increased 3.9%, to reach a total of 389,601 (prev. yr. 374,923) units. Most of this increase came from high-volume markets such as the U.K. (73,000 / +20.4%), France (34,235 / +11.6%), Spain (23,426 / +35.9%) and Belgium/Luxemburg (20,474 / +16.5%).

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Miller Motorsports Park Preview

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 8, 2010… The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team makes its final trip west this season when it travels to Miller Motorsports Park, in Tooele, Utah, for the July 11th Round 4 of the 2010 American Le Mans Series.

With four podium finishes in the first three races of the season, BMW stands second in GT manufacturer points. BMW M3 GT co-drivers Joey Hand and Dirk Müller, along with Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner, stand third and fourth in Driver points respectively.

The team recently tested for two days at Road Atlanta, in Braselton, Ga., to prepare for the heart of the season that will see five races within the next eight weeks.

SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers Breaks Ground in Moses Lake, Washington

Moses Lake, July 7, 2010. SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers – a joint venture of the BMW Group and SGL Group – broke ground today on the new greenfield carbon fiber manufacturing facility in Moses Lake, Washington. More than 70 guests from Moses Lake and Grant County, including the Governor of the State of Washington, Chris Gregoire, and Moses Lake Mayor Jon Lane were in attendance to celebrate the groundbreaking event.

The facility in Moses Lake is a fundamental component of the joint venture’s strategy to commercialize manufacturing of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) for use in BMW Group’s future Megacity Vehicle. Carbon fiber technology is becoming increasingly important in the materials substitution process to lighter materials, which helps to improve fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.

"I congratulate SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers for developing this cutting edge technology, and welcome them to Washington State," Governor Chris Gregoire said. “This new carbon fiber manufacturing plant means new jobs in Moses Lake, and is another indicator that Washington State will continue to lead in the green economy. I look forward to working with SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers to ensure its success, and building a lasting relationship.”

BMW Manufacturing Increases Workforce

Prepares for New Vehicle and Growing Demand for Current Products

Spartanburg, S.C. – July 1, 2010... BMW Manufacturing announced today it will bring on board over 500 new contingency associates in the next few months to get ready for production of the next generation BMW X3. This workforce increase also prepares Plant Spartanburg to meet growing demand of other models currently being produced for worldwide markets. The company said workers being hired under this process will be eligible for health, dental, 401(k) and vacation benefits.

These actions are part of the overall start-up plan of the $750 million plant expansion that is nearing completion and will begin production this fall. Paint and body shop expansions, as well as the construction of a new assembly hall, were announced in March 2008. These additions are proceeding on schedule and are a part of the company’s growing commitment to production in the U.S. When completed, the plant in Spartanburg will begin 2011 with an expanded capacity of over 200,000 vehicles a year.

“We are pleased to report that the BMW X5 and X6 vehicles produced in our Spartanburg plant are selling very well around the world, so we are adjusting our staffing levels to accommodate the increased global market demand, as well as prepare for the upcoming launch of the all new X3 sports activity vehicle,” said Josef Kerscher, President, BMW Manufacturing Co. in Spartanburg.

BMW Group U.S. Reports June 2010 Sales

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 1, 2010... June sales of BMW and MINI vehicles in the U.S. increased 11.9 percent to 23,331 units, delivering the best sales month for the company this year. During the first half of the year, the BMW Group reported a total sales volume of 121,585 vehicles, up 6.2 percent from the same period last year.

“We’ve been anticipating this month as it welcomed the all-new 5 Series into a market of waiting customers, and provides another vital link to our aggressive model introduction cycle,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. “While economic improvement has been, and looks to continue to be slow this year, nevertheless new core products such as the 5 Series, major upgrades to the perennial best selling X5 and 3 Series, and the new six cylinder 740i and 535i Gran Turismo are now giving us the vehicles to once again play offense in the market.”

The BMW 5 Series – the traditional leader of the midsize sports-sedan segment in the U.S. – kicks off a model offensive replacing more than 60 percent of BMW’s current model line-up with all-new products until 2012. Today, the BMW brand has leadership in the compact segment with the 3 Series, the small coupe/roadster segment with the Z4 and the large luxury sedan segment with the 7 Series. On the MINI side, starting in 2011, the product range will double from three to six models creating additional growth perspectives for the premium small car brand.

BMW ConnectedDrive enables innovative incorporation of BlackBerry® smartphones via Bluetooth® - an internationally unique function available for all BMW models starting Autumn 2010.

Munich. As part of the ongoing expansion of office functions in BMW ConnectedDrive, BMW is now the first automobile manufacturer in the world to enable e-mail messages to be received inside a vehicle enabled with a Bluetooth connection. Starting Autumn 2010, owners of a BlackBerry smartphone made by the mobile phone manufacturer RIM (Research In Motion) will be able to access the phone's e-mail function via the operating system iDrive. A new Bluetooth interface to integrate the BlackBerry device into the vehicle enables e-mails to be received, displayed on the Control Display and even read out by means of an optional voice output function. With this innovative technology, the world's premium automobile manufacturer continues to extend its leading role in the integration of entertainment, communication and online functions in vehicles.

The new facilities for e-mail access tie in directly from the BMW ConnectedDrive office functions presented at the beginning of the year. Likewise unique worldwide, these functions allow not just call and contact lists but also calendar entries, text messages, tasks and memos to be transferred from compatible smartphones to the vehicle via Bluetooth interface. The relevant entries can be selected using the Controller of the iDrive operating system and are shown on the Control Display. Even the picture file saved with a contact address on a mobile phone can be shown on the vehicle monitor. In addition, BMW ConnectedDrive also allows the music player functions of smartphones to be conveniently operated using the iDrive system. Incoming e-mail in the vehicle represents yet another milestone in the integration of modern smartphones. The new BlackBerry Pearl™ 3G is the first smartphone from the BlackBerry smartphone portfolio that supports this functionality.

Like the functions previously introduced, e-mail access via Bluetooth also helps make the use of communication and entertainment options of modern smartphones in the vehicle convenient and safe. The operating system iDrive provides unique facilities for the simple, safe and intuitive control of all functions while causing minimum distraction from the road. For the first time, incoming and saved e-mails from the Bluetooth-integrated smartphone can now be retrieved and shown on the Control Display in just a few standardized operating stages. Relief of the driver is further enhanced with the optional voice output function. It can be activated at a single press of a button, the text of the e-mail is then read out loud.

Success times four for the BMW Group at the 2010 “Engine of the Year Awards”

Engines made by BMW and MINI win awards in four out of eight capacity classes

Munich/Stuttgart. Success in four out of eight capacity classes put the BMW Group in a dominating position at the “International Engine of the Year Awards” this year. Among the award-winning power units at the world’s most renowned engine competition were both petrol and diesel engines with four, six and eight cylinders. The victorious quartet consisted of the V8 engine of the BMW M3, the inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo, direct injection and VALVETRONIC, used in such vehicles as the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the 4-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo from the BMW X1 xDrive 23d and the BMW 123d, and the 4-cylinder Twin Scroll Turbo engine of the MINI Cooper S.

The wide range of winning engines is further evidence of the outstanding expertise of the BMW Group in the area of engine development. It enables engines of great power, yet also exemplary efficiency to be offered across all series and output classes. The “Engine of the Year” awards were conferred by an international jury made up of 76 engine journalists from 35 countries. The award ceremony was held at the “Engine Expo” trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany.

The “Engine of the Year” awards have been in existence since 1999. Since then over 50 class and overall victories have been awarded to engines developed for automobiles by BMW and MINI. Among the serial production winners in this competition were the 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine from the MINI Cooper S, achieving its fourth and last victory this year. Next year it will be the turn of the recently presented successor engine in the 1.4 – 1.8 liter capacity class. In addition to the Twin Scroll Turbo technology and gasoline direct injection of its award-winning predecessor, this engine also has Variable Valve Control and an output of 135 kw/184 bhp, as well as being the world’s most efficient engine in its capacity class.

2011 BMW Frozen Gray M3 Coupes Claimed in 12 Minutes

The Competition Package reduces vehicle ride height by 10mm and includes unique 19’’ wheels with wider offset for enhanced stability, standard Electronic Damping Control with enhanced programming, and higher-threshold programming for the M Dynamic Mode. The 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupe is also equipped with the M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) which lowers the 0–60mph acceleration time of the M3 to 4.5 seconds from 4.7 (6-speed manual). BMW of North America received three awards at the 10th annual international Telematics Update Conference in Detroit, including the prestigious Global Car Manufacturer Award for BMW ConnectedDrive. Also recognized was BMW’s Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification system (Best Embedded Telematics Service Award), developed in cooperation with the William Lehman Injury Research Center. Francis Dance, ConnectedDrive Services Manager for BMW of North America, received the Telematics Leadership Award (Individual).

BMW ConnectedDrive is the name given to the collection of electronic systems designed to provide safety and connectivity to the driver and passengers of BMW vehicles worldwide. Nearing the 25th anniversary of the original BMW M3, BMW of North America today announced a production run of thirty identically-equipped 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupes for the United States. The 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupe features a special matte-gray paint with a deep metallic luster to further accentuate the athletic lines of the legendary M3. Unique Fox Red / Black bi-color Novillo leather interior is also specified. This is the first and only opportunity to obtain Frozen Gray Metallic exterior paint on the M3 for the 2011 model year in the United States.

Celebrates Production of 1 Million BMW X5’s

Spartanburg, S.C. – June 8, 2010... BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina recorded another milestone in their 15-year history as the one millionth BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle® rolled off the production line today at BMW Manufacturing Co. The Black Sapphire X5 xDrive 35i with Cinnamon Brown Nevada Leather interior is bound for a customer in China.

This is a significant achievement for the BMW Group’s only U.S. manufacturing facility at a time when the manufacturer is just months away from completing a $750 million expansion to prepare for production of the next generation BMW X3.

The BMW X5, which was originally launched in Spartanburg in 1999 as the first vehicle in the Sports Activity segment, has laid the cornerstone for BMW as the most successful premium vehicle manufacturer in the SAV/SUV segment during its 11-year history. This commitment to continuous improvement has resulted in numerous accolades for the vehicle’s design, quality and safety. In 2000, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) declared the BMW X5 to be the safest vehicle ever to be crash-tested. In 2007, the BMW X5 received a gold award in the J.D. Five BMW models now qualify for IRS Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit

Woodcliff Lake, NJ — June 3, 2010...The Internal Revenue Service today certified that the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 qualifies for up to a $900 tax credit under the Alternative Motor Vehicle provision. This serves as yet another endorsement for the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy.

The ActiveHybrid 7 combines an electric motor with BMW’s much-praised 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and new 8-speed automatic transmission to accelerate from 0 – 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, while delivering impressive EPA fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, a near 18-percent improvement over the non-hybrid 750i/Li. The ActiveHybrid 7 features Engine Start/Stop to avoid wasteful engine idling in stop-and-go driving and at traffic lights. The powerful lithium-ion battery enables systems like the radio, Bluetooth phone connection, and air-conditioning to continue running when the engine is off. Its compact size minimizes the impact on luggage capacity.

The standard and long-wheelbase versions of the ActiveHybrid 7 become the fourth and fifth BMW models to qualify for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Tax Credit, joining the ActiveHybrid X6 and BMW’s Advanced Diesel 335d Sedan and X5 xDrive35d.

The 17th BMW Art Car will race at 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A highlight will surely be the participation of the Jeff Koons’ 17th BMW Art Car, which was presented in Paris just a week before. In April 2010, BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen, announced the driver line-up for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Andy Priaulx (GB), Dirk Müller (DE) and Dirk Werner (DE) will race the BMW Art Car #79. Jörg Müller (DE), Augusto Farfus (BR), Uwe Alzen (DE) will drive the BMW Le Mans car #78.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest endurance race in all of sports car racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, Sarthe, France. Commonly known as the Grand Prix of Endurance, it is organized by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and runs on a circuit containing closed public roads. The race is designed not only to test a car and driver’s ability to be quick, but also to last over a 24-hour period.

The BMW M3 GT2

Derived from the BMW M3 high-performance sports car, the BMW M3 GT2 boasts a 4.0-liter V8 engine with a maximum output of 500 bhp, an upgraded chassis, racing-caliber brakes, and extensive use of lightweight materials. Able to reach 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, the BMW M3 GT2 is rapidly emerging as a real first year contender at this year’s event.

Joy extends its legacy: introducing the new X5

Making its North America debut at the New York International Auto Show this past April, the new 2011 BMW X5 takes the innovative design and dynamic versatility of the all-wheel-drive Sports Activity Vehicle® platform to a new level.

The front end takes on a lower, more aggressive appearance, while retaining the distinctive X5 hood design and character lines. A greater number of front-end elements are now painted, extending the finished look of the vehicle and narrowing the black trim at the bottom edge of the body. The dual round Xenon Adaptive Headlights and foglights are situated closer to the kidney grille. And a newly designed rear apron features a pair of intricately fashioned surrounds for the dual exhaust pipes. A choice of new paints – including the metallic colors Platinum Gray, Sparkling Bronze, and Deep Sea Blue – round out the premium exterior enhancements.

Under that signature X5 hood, some more surprises: two TwinPower Turbo engine options that deliver plenty of muscle. World Premiere of Jeff Koons' BMW Art Car at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Car will race at 24 hours of Le Mans.

Paris. At the premiere of the 17th BMW Art Car Jeff Koons unveiled and signed his car in front of 300 international VIP guests on June 1 in the Centre Pompidou, one of the world’s most prestigious cultural institutions for modern and contemporary art. It is the same place where Roy Lichtenstein back in 1977 first presented and signed his Art Car.

In the spirit of Calder, Stella, Lichtenstein, Warhol, BMW announced this year that the 17th Art Car created by Jeff Koons will race where the first rolling pieces of art by legendary artists raced – at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France on June 12-13, 2010. Koons’ canvas is a BMW M3 GT2, which was homologated to compete at this year’s running of the world’s most famous endurance race.

On June 2, between 11 am to 9 pm, the public will have the chance to see the Art Car free of charge in the Forum of the Centre Pompidou. At 5.30 pm Jeff Koons will participate in a book signing at the official book store of the museum before he will talk about his work in conversation with Alain Seban, President of the Centre Pompidou, at 6 pm at the Forum of the museum.

Brescia/Munich. 70 years after its victory in the 1940 Mille Miglia, the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé has once again emerged as the winner of this tradition-steeped Italian event. Giuliano Cané and Lucia Galliani authoritatively steered the Coupé through the numerous trials and clocked up the 1,000 miles through Italy without a single technical hitch. Enzo Ciravolo and Maria Leitner rounded off the BMW triumph by coming third in a series-production BMW 328, clinching another parallel to the Mille Miglia of 70 years ago when a BMW likewise finished in third place. “Victory by Giuliano Cané and Lucia Galliani along with third place achieved by Enzo Ciravolo and Maria Leitner are a marvellous example of teamwork,” commented Karl Baumer, Director of BMW Classic. “Both the blind understanding between the crews inside the cars and the cooperation with the mechanics along the way worked out perfectly. And for that I would like to say thank you to all those involved,” Baumer added.

The journey to the Italian race venue itself proved just how well the cars of 1940 have kept up their prowess. They made their way from Munich to Brescia not on the back of race transporters but under their steam, just as they had done 70 years ago. “It was the perfect dress rehearsal for the race,” noted Baumer. Nor were the drivers bothered by the inclement weather during their crossing of the Alps, wrapped up as they were in weatherproof BMW Motorrad gear. During the Mille Miglia itself, the weather was also up to its tricks. From 27 degrees Celsius on the Adriatic to near-freezing temperatures in snow and fog on Monte Terminillo, the teams were put through the whole gamut of the Italian climate. “But the trials and tribulations are quickly forgotten once all the participants – teams and cars – have made it safely across the finish line,” summed up Karl Baumer. “And our great result is the icing on the cake.”

Group revenues grew by 8.1% to euro 12,443 million (first quarter 2009: euro 11,509 million).[keep reading] The profit before tax increased to euro 508 million (first quarter 2009: loss of euro 198 million), while the profit after tax improved to euro 324 million (first quarter 2009: loss of euro 152 million). The profit before financial result (EBIT) was euro 449 million (first quarter 2009: loss of euro 55 million). The total number of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles sold increased by 13.8% to 315,614 units (first quarter 2009: 277,264 units).

BMW Welcomes Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Motorcycle Officers

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 7, 2010...Twelve motorcycle officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will ride to BMW of North America, LLC headquarters at noon on Sunday, May 9 to kick off their participation in National Police Week, held in Washington, D.C., May 9-15. The officers will tour BMW’s motorcycle training facility, where law enforcement officers become better prepared to ride specially equipped BMW police motorcycles. On Monday, they will escort 100 bicyclists riding from Somerset, NJ to the nation’s capital in the Police Unity Tour.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has 112 BMW R 1200 RT-P motorcycles in its fleet, the largest of any sheriff’s department in the country. Internationally, BMW is the largest seller of motorcycles for authority use. More than 80,000 BMW motorcycles are currently in official use in over 150 countries on five continents. Chanel and BMW are the top prestige brands among affluent Gen Y consumers, according to a new study.

The first annual L2 Gen Y Prestige Brand Rankings measured the affinity for 105 iconic brands among the next generation of prestige consumers. L2, a think tank for prestige brands, surveyed 450 Gen Y high-earners from 45 countries (83% are expected to make more than $100k+/year in the short term) and measured brands in six industry categories. The results of the study will be the topic of a forum presented by L2 in New York City on May 14.

The top brands for both male and female Gen Y are dominated by traditional luxury brands such as Chanel, Cartier, The Four Seasons, and Ralph Lauren. Cars dominated among men, capturing eight of the top 10 slots. German brands BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi also appealed to females, who rated the category second only to fashion and above beauty and skin care.

Third Podium in Second Race - BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team at Long Beach

Los Angeles – April 17, 2010... The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team M3 GT Coupes finished 3rd and 5th in Saturday’s American Le Mans at Long Beach event. In a 100-minute action-packed sprint slowed by three caution periods, BMW drivers Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner brought the No. 92 M3 home in 3rd place with 65 laps completed, 5.4 seconds behind the GT class leader. Dirk Müller and Joey Hand finished the race with the No. 90 M3 in 5th position.

Auberlen and Müller started the race by setting an aggressive pace for BMW. They ran nose-to-tail and set the fastest BMW laps of the race. Auberlen made the team’s first scheduled stop and driver change at Lap 25. YouTube: Bill Auberlen describes the race from his vantage point.

Having qualified 6th and 7th on the GT class grid on Friday, the M3s faced a strategic challenge. Street courses such as Long Beach are characterized by extremely limited overtaking space, so the team decided to forgo changing tires. The decision saved enough time to advance the M3s to 1st and 2nd in class, Milner followed by Hand, shortly after the third caution period of the race with 30 minutes remaining. For the duration, each M3 driver strove to defend as competitors on fresh tires attacked from behind. Milner and the No. 92 M3 held the GT class lead through Lap 55 and eventually finished 3rd, while Hand experienced a yet-to-be diagnosed mechanical difficulty and salvaged 5th place in the No. 90 M3. BMW Group: Megacity Vehicle to launch in 2013

Vehicle to be marketed under a sub-brand of BMW Sustainability along the entire value-added chain Joint venture to build New Energy Vehicle for Chinese market

Munich / Beijing. With the launch of its Megacity Vehicle in 2013, the BMW Group will be bringing its first series-production electric-drive model to market. “With this innovative vehicle, designed from the ground up, we will be creating new benchmarks for electric mobility from 2013 on. Our Megacity Vehicle will be significantly lighter than conventional cars and, in terms of sustainability, will set a new standard across the entire value-added chain,” said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, on Thursday ahead of the Auto China 2010 show in Beijing.

The Megacity Vehicle will be a zero-emission urban car for the world’s metropolitan regions. It is currently being developed as part of project i and will be available from 2013 under a sub-brand of BMW. When it comes to the choice of materials, the company is broaching entirely new territory. This is because weight plays a pivotal role in the range achievable by electrically driven vehicles. The ultra-light yet high-strength composite CFRP (carbon fibre-reinforced plastic), for example, plays a significant part in the materials mix.

This vehicle will radically alter the motor industry as we know it. The BMW Group is currently the only company that will be launching a volume-production vehicle on the market that features carbon fibre-reinforced material,” explained Reithofer. "We were among the first manufacturers to pick up on the trend towards electric mobility and to act accordingly. More and more people around the globe are very keen on electric driving. Research shows, moreover, that more than half of the population around the world already live in conurbations," Reithofer added.

BMW Group with sales growth of 13.8% in first quarter

Munich. The BMW Group increased sales by 13.8% percent in the first quarter: A total of 315,614 (prev. yr. 277,264) BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles were delivered to customers worldwide.

The company’s sales volumes rose 12.1% in March to reach a total of 141,701 (prev. yr. 126,381) vehicles. All three brands made strong gains: Sales of BMW brand vehicles climbed 12.7% to 117,696 (prev. yr. 104,423) units in the month under review. MINI delivered 23,880 vehicles in March (prev. yr. 21,888 / +9.1%), while Rolls-Royce automobiles were presented to 125 customers (prev. yr. 70 /+78.6%) last month.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing said, “We are back on our growth track in nearly all the automobile markets. We had a good first quarter with a sales increase of 13.8%. We intend to continue improving on last year’s figures throughout the second quarter – thanks not least to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and new models such as the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible.” Robertson added: “For 2010 as a whole, we are aiming for healthy growth in the single-digit percent range to reach more than 1.3 million vehicles.”

Exports of over One Million Vehicles in first 15 years of South Carolina Plant

Spartanburg, S.C. – April 7, 2010... Since announcing its arrival in South Carolina in 1992, BMW Manufacturing said today that it has surpassed the export of over one million vehicles, 85% of which have gone through the Port of Charleston. Currently, over 70% of the vehicles produced in Spartanburg are exported to over 120 worldwide markets.

In 2009, BMW commemorated its 15 year anniversary and the production of 1.5 million vehicles. As BMW's only U.S. manufacturing facility, the plant has maintained its commitment to the future of South Carolina by continuing its long-standing partnership with the South Carolina State Ports Authority.

2010 red dot award: The BMW Group wins six prizes for outstanding product design

International jury of experts gives the Rolls-Royce Ghost, the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the BMW X1, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW F 800 R, the BMW S 1000 RR the 2010 red dot award.

Munich. The presentation of the 2010 red dot award once again provides impressive confirmation of the outstanding quality of BMW Group design. Six current models of the BMW Group will receive the internationally renowned award this year, with the new Rolls-Royce Ghost winning the special “red dot: best of the best” award for the very highest level of design quality in the Automobiles, Transport and Caravans category. Other BMW Group models to be awarded the red dot as a mark of outstanding design are the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, the BMW X1 and the motorcycle model BMW F 800 R. There were also honorable mentions from the international jury of experts for the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and the motorcycle model BMW S 1000 RR. The awards will be presented at a gala held at the Aalto Theatre in Essen on July 5, 2010.

The red dot award is one of the most important awards in the world for product design. It was first awarded in 1955 and recognizes outstanding design work in a wide range of categories including not only automobiles, architecture, household and home electronics but also fashion, life science and medicine. This year the jury, made up of international design experts, rated 4,252 products from 57 nations. Their assessment is based on 17 criteria ranging from degree of innovation to functionality and ecological compatibility. In the Automobile, Transport and Caravan category, the jury issued 24 red dot awards this year–three of the award winners received the special “best of the best” rating.

This highest red dot seal of quality is given for recognition of unusually high-quality and groundbreaking design. The award-winning Rolls-Royce Ghost is an automobile whose unique character is expressed by an exclusive, unmistakable appearance. NY Auto Show Best Cars: BMW 5 Series

The world badly needs the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, which got its U.S. introduction at the New York International Auto Show. Without the new BMW 5 Series, competitors wouldn't be able to run ads saying "brakes faster than a BMW 5 Series" ... "more shoulder room in back than a 5 Series" ... "tighter turning radius" and so forth. Everybody's better than BMW in one facet. The BMW 5 Series is the benchmark for mid-size luxury-sports sedans and the 2011 model continues the sporty handling flair of a BMW 3 Series, while picking up as much room inside of the last-generation BMW 7 Series, especially in the formerly cramped rear seat.[keep reading] BMW worked out some of the design quirks on the 2003-2009 model and it may be the handsomest BMW sedan you can buy today. With prices starting in the low 50s (most likely decreasing compared to 2009s with similar content), this is not the car for everyone. But it will be the benchmark.

The car initially arrives with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine (BMW 535i) and ferocious twin-turbo V8 (BMW 550i). BMW keeps adding fuel-saving tricks (BMW calls them EfficientDynamics) such as battery regeneration; automatic stop-start, even though this car is not a hybrid; and an eight-speed automatic transmission. At some point in the next year, BMW will return with an entry-level 528i with a non-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that would be pretty quick for any other car. If you like technology and driver aids, BMW says the 5 Series will now offer every technology that's on the 7 Series: heads-up display, Active Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, night vision with pedestrian detection, surround-view camera vision (one camera on each side of the car, moved to a God's eye view on the LCD), and active suspension controls. Plus one the 7 Series doesn't have yet: automatic parking into a space just four feet longer than the BMW's 192 inches.

BMW Group Commitment to Electric Vehicle Development Unwavering

Published reports create inaccurate impression of size of upcoming BMW ActiveE field trial fleet

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 8, 2010... Recent published reports have incorrectly stated that the size of the fleet of BMW ActiveEs that will be deployed during the BMW Group’s second-phase field trial in the US will be limited to 200 vehicles. While the exact size of the fleet has yet to be confirmed, it will be at least as large as the MINI E fleet which is currently in operation. There are 450 MINI Es on the road in the US right now. They are being driven by a dedicated group of individuals and select fleet users.

“I would hate for anyone to get the impression that we are backing away from our commitment to EV development or the Megacity Vehicle project. Let me reassure you that nothing could be further from the truth,” said Rich Steinberg, Manager – Electric Vehicle Operations and Strategy. “With one of the largest fleet of electric vehicles in operation today, we are learning a great deal. Those lessons have already been applied in our development work. One example is the liquid heating and cooling capability for the batteries in the upcoming BMW ActiveE. This will help to optimize operating range in conditions of extreme hot and cold climates. Others include the four-seat capacity of the BMW ActiveE and its seven cubic feet of trunk space. More than anything we have been impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm that MINI E drivers have brought to this project.”

In preparation for the upcoming BMW ActiveE field trial, which will begin in 2011, the BMW Group announced at the North American International Auto Show in January that it will offer one-year lease extensions to current MINI E lessees.

BMW Makes HD Radio Standard in 2010

BMW of North America, LLC today announced that the launch of the 2011 BMW 5 Series Sedan marks the first time BMW’s entire product line is equipped with standard digital HD Radio Technology entertainment systems. Most of the 2011 BMW model lineup featuring the upgraded technology started production this month and will be available at dealerships by June 2010.

HD Radio Technology enables exclusive HD2/HD3 channels – added sub-channels spun off the main radio frequency – which broadcast unique, new content for avid radio listeners in local markets. These channels are found directly adjacent to the main (HD1) station on the dial. Today, there are over 2,000 radio stations in the U.S. broadcasting with HD Radio Technology, more than 1,100 of which are airing the HD2/HD3 channels.

BMW Manufacturing Launches New X5

New Model includes 4,000 new parts

Spartanburg, S.C. – March 23, 2010... More dynamic, efficient, and luxurious than ever, the new BMW X5 continues to strengthen its leading position within the four-wheel drive, premium vehicle segment. The new BMW X5 has a fresh new look and features new engines, drive trains, and thousands of new parts. The associates at BMW Manufacturing have been planning the launch of this new model for over 18 months, which involves nearly 4,000 new parts.

Since launching the original BMW X5 in 1999, this new model X5, the fourth generation, features a completely revised range of engines, standard eight-speed automatic transmission and innovative driver assistance systems that ensure the driving pleasure of the new X5 offers even greater fascination. The production launch of this new model occurred as a digital changeover within Plant Spartanburg, meaning that production associates learned new vehicle processes alongside existing processes and parts were seamlessly transferred into the new model X5. This changeover took place over a single weekend, with no ramp-down of the 2010 model on March 19 and no ramp-up of the 2011 model on March 22.

“The new model X5 features exterior design changes including new front and rear bumpers, new front fenders, new headlights and new tail lights. 535i and 550i to start at $50,475 and $60,575 respectively

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 25, 2010... BMW has announced pricing for the all-new 2011 BMW 535i and 550i Sedans. The new 535i Sedan will start at $50,475, and the V-8 powered 550i will start at $60,575, including $875 Destination & Handling. The 535i receives BMW’s newest 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline, while the 550i will be powered by BMW’s reverse-flow 4.4-liter Twin Power turbo V8. Both will feature the new 8-speed automatic transmission. Even with these enhancements, the base-prices for both models are lower than their 2010 predecessors – $1,650 in the case of the 535i and $900 lower for the 550i. The 535i and 550i continue a tradition that is the hallmark of the ultimate driving machine – the option of a 6-speed manual transmission at no cost. The choice of a manual transmission has been a 5 Series tradition through all six generations since its introduction to the US 35 years ago.

As on any other BMW vehicle, BMW Ultimate Service, $0 maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, is included. BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Scores Double Sebring Podium

Sebring, Fla. – March 21, 2010, 1:00 AM Eastern Time... The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team proved JOY IS BMW with a double-podium class finish for the BMW M3 GT Coupes in yesterday’s 58th annual American Le Mans Series 12 Hours of Sebring.

Bill Auberlen, Tommy Milner and Dirk Werner co-drove the No. 92 BMW M3 GT to a second place finish (seventh overall), finishing 330 laps of the 3.7-mile, 17-turn Sebring International Raceway.

The No. 90 M3 GT co-driven by Joey Hand, Dirk Müller and Andy Priaulx completed the same number of laps to finish third (eighth overall). Hand set a new GT class race record with a 2:00.985 minute lap (lap 185) during his final stint.

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Launches 2010 Season at Sebring

Joy is taking the green flag.

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – March 15, 2010... The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team takes the green flag for the 2010 season of the American Le Mans Series at the 58th annual 12 Hours of Sebring on March 20th. The team has entered two BMW M3s, each competition-hardened from their inaugural year of racing.

The classic endurance race starts the nine-race ALMS championship that will see new competitors in the increasingly competitive GT2 class1. After a dose of teething problems at the opening round in 2009, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team found strength in the second half of the season. The team ultimately finished with one win, five more podiums, two poles, and three fast race laps.

''We've essentially been preparing for this race for one year,'' said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager. ''Gremlins struck last year at Sebring, but following a successful 12 hour simulation here in January and two excellent days at the recent Winter Test, I believe we are ready. Last year, the target was to take one checkered flag; this year the target is two.''

BMW Group U.S. Reports February 2010 Sales

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 2, 2010... BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) increased its February sales 13.7 percent selling 17,971 vehicles compared to the same month in 2009. Both the BMW and MINI brands improved performance with BMW reporting a sales increase of 16.3 percent to 15,100 units and MINI a 1.6 percent increase to 2,871 vehicles.[keep reading]

Results were driven by the excellent performance of the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle, up 75.5 percent, and the X6 increasing 97.6 percent. In the large premium sedan segment, the BMW 7 Series has led the category for the last two months.

Comparison: 2011 BMW 535i vs 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350

Climb into the 535i, and it's hard to believe the two cars weigh the same. There's a bit less heft to the controls, and g-forces in any direction seem to build with less resistance and less effort. Combining Active Steering with the Sport Package (Driving Dynamics Control, Active Roll Stabilization, and adaptive damping-figure $4500 together) gives the car incredibly sharp responses that make it feel light and nimble, especially in the Sport + setting, which eliminates virtually all body roll. The level of feedback at the helm feels much closer to that of the benchmark E39 5er.

BMW NA Receives Two Green Building LEED Certificates

Two of BMW NA’s Regional Distribution Centers located in suburban Chicago (Minooka, IL) and Eastern Pennsylvania (Lower Nazareth, PA) have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council.

According to LEED guidelines, both facilities were constructed in an environmental and sustainable way. Highlights include energy and water usage being reduced by more than 20 percent compared to standard building practice. Further, over 80 percent of all construction waste was recycled or otherwise diverted from landfills. Both facilities were noted for using recycled and locally sourced materials, drought tolerant landscaping, and eliminating permanent irrigation systems to reduce the use of potable water.

The facility in Lower Nazareth, PA received “LEED certified” recognition, while the facility in Minooka, IL was awarded “LEED silver certified.” Currently, the two centers serve 279 BMW and MINI dealers in the Northeast and Midwest with next-day delivery of auto and motorcycle parts, accessories and branded lifestyle products.

JEFF KOONS TO CREATE NEW BMW ART CAR

Munich/New York. Internationally acclaimed artist Jeff Koons will create the 17th BMW Art Car in the 35th anniversary year of the program.

Koons and Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW North America jointly made the announcement today at an event held at Koons’ New York City studio. "I always thought it would be an honor to work on a BMW Art Car,” said Jeff Koons. “I look forward to participate in a tradition set forth by such great artists as Calder, Lichtenstein, Stella, and Warhol."

“The entire BMW Group is looking forward to this celebration of contemporary art by Jeff Koons, one of the greatest artists of our time,” said O’Donnell in making the announcement.

BMW GROUP U.S. REPORTS JANUARY 2010 SALES

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 2, 2010... With sales up 7.7 percent in January to 15,410 vehicles, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) had a good start into the year 2010.

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 7.6 percent in January for a total of 13,163 vehicles compared to 12,232 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago. MINI USA reported sales of 2,247 automobiles, an increase of 7.9 percent compared to 2,082 cars reported last January.

Munich/Valencia. The BMW ORACLE Racing team has won the 33rd America's dethroning Swiss holder Alinghi. The challenger's spectacular trimaran ''USA 17'', with its futuristic 68-metre wing sail, defeated the catamaran ''Allinghi 5'' in the waters off Valencia on the second day to record the decisive second win. The best-of-three match ended 2-0 in favour of the US crew of owner Larry Ellison. This Deed of Gift series saw the holder and challenger go head-to-head in a straight duel.

Originally launched for the 2000 model year in late 1999, the BMW X5 permanently changed the automotive landscape. Six-Cylinder BMW Power Returns to the 7 Series in North America.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - January 11, 2010...As an exciting example of its EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy, BMW announced the North American debut of the 7 Series with a twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine. Featuring BMW's award-winning inline-6 engine that produces V-8 power on six-cylinder fuel consumption, the new BMW 740i and BMW 740Li achieve a remarkable balance of power, efficiency, and sporty driving dynamics. Both models will go on sale in the United States as 2011 models in Spring 2010. The M.S.R.P. of the 740i is $71,025 and the long wheelbase 740Li will retail for $75,425 (prices Include $875 Destination and Handling charge).

In 1977, the original BMW 7 Series was launched exclusively with inline-6 propulsion. The United States first met the BMW 7 Series in the 1978 model year as the 733i Sedan. The 733i featured a 3.2-liter inline-6 engine rated at 197 horsepower. The 733i remained on sale in America until it was replaced in 1985 by the BMW 735i Sedan. The 735i, which featured an updated inline-6 engine producing 218 horsepower from 3.4 liters, enjoyed a production run that lasted through the end of the 1992 model year. The 735i was joined by the extended-wheelbase 735iL in May of 1988.

BMW Championship to run through 2014 under new agreement

The original partnership agreement of six years was forged in 2007 with the creation of the BMW Championship – the third leg in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Woodcliff Lake, NJ – December 16, 2009 2:00pm Eastern ... As an exciting example of its EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy, BMW announced the North American debut of the 7 Series with a twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine. Featuring BMW's award-winning inline-6 engine that produces V-8 power on six-cylinder fuel consumption, the new BMW 740i and BMW 740Li achieve a remarkable balance of power, efficiency, and sporty driving dynamics. Both models will go on sale in the United States as 2011 models in Spring 2010. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

In 1977, the original BMW 7 Series was launched exclusively with inline-6 propulsion. The United States first met the BMW 7 Series in the 1978 model year as the 733i Sedan. The 733i featured a 3.2-liter inline-6 engine rated at 197 horsepower. The 733i remained on sale in America until it was replaced in 1985 by the BMW 735i Sedan. The 735i, which featured an updated inline-6 engine producing 218 horsepower from 3.4 liters, enjoyed a production run that lasted through the end of the 1992 model year. The 735i was joined by the extended-wheelbase 735iL in May of 1988.

A keystone of BMW's EfficientDynamics philosophy is ''virtual displacement,'' the notion that BMW’s modern engines of smaller displacement can equal or exceed the outputs of traditional engines of larger displacement and more cylinders. This principle is already seen in the BMW 750i model, which features a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine performing at the level of BMW's previous-generation V12 engine. Virtual displacement provides the power of a larger engine with the fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions signature of a smaller engine. The 2011 BMW 740i and 740Li feature BMW’s internationally acclaimed twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine with up-rated output of 315 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque from 1600-4500 rpm. All-aluminum construction, High Precision direct fuel injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft technology, and Brake Energy Regeneration are a few of the technologies used under the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy to place the 740i and 740Li among the most powerful six-cylinder luxury sedans in the world. Delivering power to the rear wheels is BMW’s 6-speed automatic transmission, well-known for fast, smooth gearshifts and an ability to intelligently adapt to the driver's style.

The combination of twin low-mass turbochargers and High Precision direct injection offers an output a naturally-aspirated engine would only be able to provide through more cylinders and larger displacement. The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high output throughout the entire engine speed range. Nominal peak torque is increased to 332 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 335 hp is delivered at 5,800 rpm.

Overboost function for athletic acceleration.
The enhanced engine management system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function to briefly increase torque under full load by another 37 lb-ft. This temporary torque peak of 369 lb-ft gives the car a significant increase in acceleration. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is will complete the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds (preliminary). Top speed of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Yesterday, on Eve of Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW announced that it won two Best Resale Value awards from Kelley Blue Book and a Residual Value Award from Automotive Lease Guide (ALG). The BMW 1 Series won the ALG Residual Value Award in the Near Luxury Car category. The BMW X5 xDrive35d Advanced Diesel was named Best Resale Value in its class by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com, and the 2010 BMW M3 is one of the Top 10 cars with Best Resale Value according to Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

As the exclusive automotive sponsor of the event, BMW provided a fleet of BMW ActiveHybrid X6 vehicles to some of the high-profile guests who attended the opening, including Pierce Brosnan, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Ludacris, Gilles Marini and Sex and the City creator Darren Star. [keep reading] Last night marked one of the first opportunities for consumers to catch a glimpse of one of BMW's new hybrids, which will not debut in dealer showrooms until December 5th. The ActiveHybrid X6 is the most powerful hybrid in the world and 20% more efficient than the standard BMW X6 xDrive50i. It has the ability to drive in an electric mode up to a speed of 37 mph, which means that under those conditions, the car will release zero harmful emissions.
More than 400 special guests turned out to fete the opening of Bouchon in Beverly Hills, which is named for the particular style of café that existed in the province of Lyon for centuries. Bouchon's cuisine is rooted in Keller's philosophy of combining the finest seasonal ingredients with unfailing attention to detail in presentation. Leading the Beverly Hills team are Chef de Cuisine Rory Herrmann, General Manager Greg Rowan, Pastry Chef Scott Wheatfill and Head Sommelier Alex Weil.
Located in the Beverly Hills Gardens building at 235 North Cañon Drive, the restaurant joins the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group's other Bouchon bistros, located in Yountville and Las Vegas, and marks the premiere of Bar Bouchon, featuring an extensive wines-by-the-glass and beer selection, as well as an array of small plate offerings. World's first emission-free foundry.

Landshut/Munich. From 2010, BMW's Landshut plant will boast the world's first foundry with emission-free sand core production. The light-alloy foundry at the BMW plant is introducing a new sand core production method for gravity die-casting, whereby conventional organic binders will be replaced by highly eco-friendly inorganic binders, a which generate virtually no pollutant emissions. The introduction of this innovative production method will allow the light-alloy foundry to reduce its emissions of combustion residues by 98 per cent. The plant will completely decommission its current waste air treatment systems by 2010.

The Landshut light-alloy foundry's approximately 1,300 employees currently produce around 1.8 million aluminum and magnesium castings a year, with a total weight of 45,000 tonnes. The product range includes engine components such as cylinder heads and crankcases, structural components and chassis parts such as suspension strut supports, tailgate frames, corner castings and casting nodes for the front and rear axle.

[keep reading] Approximately half the castings produced are gravity die-cast using sand cores. The light-alloy foundry uses some 120 tonnes of sand daily in sand core production. 90 per cent of this volume is recycled. Following an initial pilot operation phase, the BMW Group is now poised to become the world's first manufacturer to use inorganic sand cores in volume production of all engine core components. The inorganic binders used are based on water-soluble alkali silicates (i.e. a water/silica sand solution), resulting in significantly reduced resource consumption.

''Inorganic sand core production positions us at the forefront of the foundry industry,'' says Dr Wolfgang Blümlhuber, head of the light-alloy foundry. ''We see inorganic sand core production as key to competitive operation, particularly in highly industrialized countries with stringent environmental regulations, where manufacturing costs are correspondingly high.''

The light-alloy foundry first introduced this reduced-emission production process for use in the manufacturing of aluminum crankcases and cylinder heads for six-cylinder diesel engines. Now inorganic sand core production is gradually being extended to the foundry's entire product range.

In addition to the environmental aspect, the process also has economic and ergonomic benefits. The strength of the resulting light-alloy components is enhanced by the improved, faster solidification of the liquid aluminum during the casting process, as it cools from a temperature of approximately 750° C. The BMW Group is using this light-but-strong design potential as a way of producing energy-saving, fuel-efficient engines capable of higher peak cylinder pressures and increased power density.

The Landshut light-alloy foundry's employees benefit as well, due to substantially enhanced working conditions. Until now, the casting tools had to be blasted with dry ice after every use in order to remove combustion residues. This energy-intensive process can now be dispensed with.

To accompany the introduction of inorganic sand core production, the light-alloy foundry developed new core shooting tools and equipment. The casting equipment has become less complex, since the previously required venting systems can be dispensed with. At the same time, the cooling intensity during the casting process can be increased, thus reducing manufacturing cycle times by around 10 per cent. The simulation technology used in the process and tool development was developed at the BMW Landshut plant too.

''We will be able to fully amortize the investment in tools and equipment, along with our development costs, in the space of just a few years at most thanks to increased productivity, and thanks to savings on tool maintenance, tool and workshop air extraction systems and waste air treatment systems,'' says Dr Wolfgang Blümlhuber, head of the BMW light-alloy foundry. Introducing the 7 series with xDrive all-wheel drive.

It’s long been a bellwether for many of our most powerful ideas. And now the 7 Series for 2010 will offer an enhanced version of xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, setting a new benchmark for nimble handling characteristics in all-wheel-drive luxury sedans. In split seconds, the 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive can identify and limit understeer, shifting up to 80 percent of the torque to the rear axle while preserving stability. Instead, we’re going to focus on the ones that excel at connectivity. As Consumer Guide’s resident technology and gadget geek, I dedicate a fair amount of evaluation time to how I interact with a vehicle, and vice versa. Most manufacturers understand that society is more mobile than it has been in the past. There are very few people nowadays who don't own a cell phone and/or a digital music player.

While changes to cars can't happen overnight, these companies have been pretty good about at least offering a stereo input plug for MP3 players as well as dealer-installed electronics to connect cell phones to the stereo system.

Some companies are better at this than others, and we’re going to focus on five that are at the head of this class. Their systems score points for not only offering cell-phone and MP3-player connectivity, but also for being simple enough to operate without an engineering degree from MIT.

A main focus of our 2008 BMW X5 extended-use test was to see if we could live with the company’s controversial iDrive control interface on a daily basis. For most of the Consumer Guide staff, the answer eventually became "Yes."

For those of us with iPods, the X5 was an ideal companion. Our test truck's USB port made short work of navigating MP3-player menus through the dashboard screen and console joystick. The same interface also made using cell phones simple, while allowing the driver to keep both hands on the wheel at all times.

Further refinements to iDrive, which can be found on most of BMW’s 2009 cars, make the system even more user friendly. On vehicles such as the 3-Series and Z4, we think iDrive is easier to use for audio functions (especially with MP3 players) than on similar cars when not equipped with it.

Say what you want about iDrive, but after spending lots of time with the most recent iterations of this system, the folks from Bayerische Motoren Werke have cell phone and MP3 interaction nailed.

BMW Group named most sustainable automobile company worldwide for fifth consecutive year.

The latest Dow Jones Sustainability Index World once again ranks the BMW Group as super sector leader.
 
The SAM Group today published its latest evaluation for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). For the fifth consecutive year, it rated the BMW Group as the leader in its industry, making it the world’s most sustainable automobile manufacturer. The BMW Group is the only company in the automobile industry to have been listed in this important sustainability index family every year since it was established in 1999.
 
"We are delighted that the BMW Group is super sector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World for the fifth consecutive year. This proves once again that we are well on our way to establishing sustainability as the guiding principle for all our processes. We refined our sustainability strategy in the first half of 2009 – this was the next logical step and another important milestone," said Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
 
The Board of Management of the BMW Group declared sustainability one of the company's core strategic principles back in 2000. At the BMW Group corporate sustainability is firmly entrenched throughout the entire value chain: from the development of fuel-saving and alternative vehicle concepts through clean production processes to green recycling practices. The BMW Group also accepts responsibility for its roughly 100,000 employees and is involved in social projects outside of its plants.
 
In recent months the BMW Group has taken important steps towards further improving sustainability. Each and every proposal today is measured against the corporate goal of sustainability. BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Heads to Canada

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – Aug. 26, 2009... The month of August has been the most intense period on the 2009 American Le Mans Series calendar. The rush of events at Mid-Ohio, Road America and now Mosport provide race fans with nearly uninterrupted action. The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team heads to Canada and Mosport International Raceway fresh from its first GT2 win on August 16 at Road America, where the No. 90 M3 of Joey Hand and Bill Auberlen led a one-two class sweep for the team in only the seventh race of its inaugural season.

With three high-profile events remaining in the season, the team has had no time for rest. Mosport is known as the fastest track in the history of the American Le Mans Series. The circuit’s high-speed corners and elevation changes require complete preparation and focus by the crew and drivers. The two-hour-and-forty-five-minute race will also provide an excellent opportunity to fine tune for the equally demanding Road Atlanta and the grueling ten-hour Petit Le Mans on September 26.

“Going into the season we had hoped to become quickly competitive, but our opponents continue to raise the bar week after week,” said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager. “The win is a result of all parties growing together more closely and a desire for victory. Nonetheless – it is a huge relief. The confidence that we can challenge the best teams will allow us now to continue to push hard for the remaining three events. There are still a lot of points to go around, and we would like to collect many of them.”

"The win at Road America marks the point where we hit our stride as a new team this season,” said Bobby Rahal. “At Mosport, you must be sharp and focused to win, so I believe this is the perfect time for our team’s first attempt at the track.”

The Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. ET Sunday, Aug. 30 and will be broadcast live on SPEED television.

BMW M3 Races to Victory Lane at Road America with 1-2 GT2 Finish

In its inaugural season, the new BMW M3 Racing program entered the winner’s circle this Sunday with a 1-2 finish by the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team at the American Le Mans Series race in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

The No. 90 M3, driven by Joey Hand and Bill Auberlen, achieved the new M3 racing program’s first victory. Teammates Tommy Milner and Dirk Müller in the No. 92 M3 scored their fourth podium finish of the season.

As the race began, starting drivers Bill Auberlen, in the No. 90 M3, and Tommy Milner, in the No. 92 M3, took advantage of their front row starting positions and opened a lead on the GT2 class. Only 15 minutes in, an early yellow slowed the field, but instead of reducing the BMW M3s lead to mere feet, it increased it to almost a full lap as both M3s received a wave-by when the pace car picked up the overall leader. Before the race went green again, both M3s were able to pit for fuel, and Milner picked up the lead through pitstop speed.

At the one hour mark Milner still held the lead over Auberlen, but as the race’s second caution period occurred a “race within the race” began. Pitting both M3s under yellow, the crew of the No. 90 M3 got Hand serviced just a tick of the watch ahead of Müller to take the lead. Unfortunately, too many men over the wall for the No. 92 M3 resulted in a 60 second penalty, putting Müller an additional minute behind Hand, but still in second place.

Pitting a second time under the race’s third caution period, the M3s cycled through two more fast stops for fuel and new Dunlop tires. Today, able to keep the competition in check, the two M3s stayed in front for the remainder the contest to open another winning chapter in the history of BMW Motorsport.

“Previously, I was asked about the best moment of this program and my answer was bringing the new BMW M3s to the grid at Sebring.” said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager, “Now, I would give a different answer. We were fast from the beginning of the weekend and brought home the first victory for the program. We have now arrived at a level where we can fight for top honors and that’s what the program was designed to do.”

“It can’t get better than this!” said Bobby Rahal, Team Principal, “Great for the team and great for BMW. Everyone did a super job today!”

Round 8 of the American Le Mans Series will be held at Mosport International Raceway on August 30th.

EPA Recognizes BMW Manufacturing Among Nation's Leading Users of On-Site Green Power

BMW Ranks 7th out of 20 Green Power Partners

Spartanburg, S.C. – August 6, 2009…BMW Manufacturing Co. announced today that they received a No. 7 ranking of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new top 20 on-site Green Power Partners.

The EPA’s Green Power Partnership recognized these partners for generating the most green electricity on-site. To qualify as an EPA Green Power Partner, the user must be harnessing and deploying green power – solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biogas and/or low-impact hydropower – at their facility rather than at central power plants.

BMW Manufacturing has received this distinction, in large part, due to the ongoing Landfill Gas to Energy program which began in late 2002. For over 6 years, BMW has collected methane gas from the nearby Palmetto Landfill and transported it through a 9.5 mile pipeline to the Plant’s energy center where it provides energy to over 60% of the 2.5 million square foot plant.

"EPA commends our leading partners for their continued commitment to protecting the environment by using green power," said Kathleen Hogan, Director of the Climate Protection Partnerships Division at EPA. ”By supporting green power, BMW Manufacturing is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, supporting clean energy technologies, and contributing to a clean energy future."

Recently, BMW announced a $12 million investment to add 2 new, highly efficient gas turbine generators capable of producing 11,000 kilowatts (kW) of electricity. These two new co-generation turbines will replace four older, less-efficient turbines. The new turbines have the capability to increase electrical output from 14% up to almost 30% of the plant’s current electrical demand.

“BMW’s landfill gas program has greatly contributed to our ongoing commitment to sustainability,” explained Josef Kerscher, President of BMW Manufacturing. “Using methane gas to provide energy for our plant has saved BMW an annual average savings of $5 million in energy costs.”

With the addition of the new turbines, the Landfill Gas project will return an additional average annual cost savings to BMW of up to $2 million and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 92,000 tons per year or the equivalent to the benefit of planting over 23,000 acres of trees annually or 30 times the size of New York’s Central Park.

BMW Manufacturing is completing a $750 million expansion to add 300,000 square feet to their Paint Shop and construct a new 1.2 million square foot Assembly plant. Many new technologies throughout the new construction support BMW’s sharp focus on energy savings, including:

* Installation of a new paint conveyer system technology that reduces overall water consumption in the Paint Shop by 50%.
* A new concept for air ventilation that will save an estimated 31% of energy when compared to using a conventional ventilation system
* A new Integrated Paint Process that will reduce the paint shop’s waste by nearly 80%

In addition, BMW Manufacturing recycles over 83% of all waste streams and uses Solar energy to power the a trash compactor in the company’s main cafeteria. Use of the solar-powered trash compactor dramatically reduces the frequency of trash collection, reducing fuel cost and exhaust fumes. This solar-powered trash compactor is the first in use at an automotive plant in the United States.

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Races to Second Consecutive Podium Finish

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Races to Second Consecutive Podium Finish at Mid-Ohio

Lexington, Ohio. – Aug. 8, 2009… In the most competitive race of the season Dirk Mϋller and Tommy Milner drove the No. 92 BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team M3 to a third place finish today at the Acura Sports Car Challenge. The duo completed 107 laps in the two-hour-and-forty-five-minute race held at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course with Mϋller racing to the podium after a thrilling pass in the closing laps of the race.

Teammates Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand finished eighth after a collision by a prototype car cost them one lap early in the race. Hand set the GT2 class fastest race lap, the first for the team this season.

Almost immediately following the wave of the green flag an early caution slowed the field for the opening 22 minutes of the race. The race began in earnest after the restart with Tommy Milner holding the fourth position in the No. 92 M3. He passed for third on lap 14 as a light rain began to fall, but fell back to fourth as a fierce battle began between positions three through six.

Bill Auberlen started the No. 90 M3 from the rear of the grid following a decision by the team to change tires before the start. The crew elected to pit him for fuel just before the restart so the Californian began the race off pit sequence to the rest of the GT2 class. Just after moving into eighth on lap 19 he was hit by a P1 class car and was forced to the pits for new tires, ultimately losing a lap.

At the one hour mark, Milner had consolidated his hold on fourth, having completed 35 laps. He pitted on lap 50, handing the No. 92 M3 to Dirk Mϋller. Setting some of the quickest GT2 lap time of the race, Auberlen moved up to sixth as the balance of the GT2 field made their first pit stops. With one hour and thirty-five minutes complete, Auberlen pitted the No. 90 M3. Hand quickly got into the race, setting the fastest GT2 lap (1:21.969) on lap 67.

The race settled in for some 40 minutes, but a late race charge by Mϋller had him within feet of third place in the final minutes. He made a great move under braking in turn one with five laps to go to bring home the team’s fourth podium finish of the season. Hand finished eighth.

Bobby Rahal, Team Principal:
“Dirk and Tommy did a great job in the No. 92 M3. We had to gamble a little bit with that last stop. We left the tires on eight laps longer than before and they hung in there. Dirk was able to run down Beretta for third, which was great to see. It’s unfortunate that Bill got hit, but yet the performance of the car was excellent after that. A good day for our team.”

“For the second consecutive time we saw a very exciting race. Today provided lots of entertainment for the spectators. That’s what they want and expect and we are happy to provide our part of it. The podium was represented by three different makes and the new colors certainly spice things up.”

“I am really happy for everybody to finish third. It was tough, but we fought a good fight. I tried to stay in the pack and push. The team strategy worked well. We didn’t change tires; Dunlop gave me brilliant tires that lasted. Olivier (Beretta) was really quick on the straights, but I pressured him and pressured him and got him under braking in the last corner. I am really loving it.”

“I had a good battle with our competition from Maranello for third, and I knew I was faster before the pass. The tires were regaining strength toward the end of the stint, so I just kept my driving clean and tried to position the car to give Dirk the best possible start to his stint. Dirk did a great job pushing to the end to secure the team’s fourth podium this season.”

Bill Auberlen, No. 90 M3 (eighth):
“We had a super fast car all weekend. The guys do a phenomenal job. In the race I was catching people then I got knocked out. Joey and I can’t wait to go to Road America and turn this thing around.”

Round 7 of the American Le Mans Series will be held at Road America on August 16th.

Roadster fascination: BMW Z4 Wins Renowned IDEA Design Award

Precise formal styling and authentic proportions impress jury

Just a few weeks after its market launch, the BMW Z4 Roadster has received the International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) 2009.  The award is presented annually by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), based in Dulles, Virginia.

The BMW Z4 received the bronze award, continuing the success story of BMW Group vehicles in this competition.  Since 2000, nine vehicles of the BMW Group brands; BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad, have been recognized for their outstanding design.

The new BMW Z4 impressed the jury with a design that unmistakably and authentically reflects the driving pleasure characteristic of the roadster.  With its long hood, long wheelbase, large wheels and short overhangs, the BMW Z4 roadster possesses classic roadster proportions interpreted with modern styling characteristic of the brand.

Its sophisticated surface design gives the BMW Z4 an elegance which can be seen from every perspective. Its appearance is that of a vehicle sculpture, shaped as a single entity.  An equally characteristic feature is the low seating position close to the rear axle.

The success of the BMW Z4 at the 2009 IDEA Awards builds on the outstanding results of the BMW Group in this competition in past years.  Three vehicles of the BMW Group have received a gold award: the motorcycle models BMW K 1200 LT in 2000 and BMW R 1200 GS (2004) and the MINI Cooper S (2003).  Silver has gone to the BMW X5 (2000) and the MINI Convertible (2005), bronze to the motorcycle model BMW F 650 CS (2003).  What is more, the BMW 3 Series Convertible and the motorcycle model BMW F 8090 GS achieved finalist status in last year’s competition.

The international jury of the IDEA Awards presented awards in 17 categories this year.  In addition to products from the fields of transport, office equipment, communication, household and consumer electronics.  There was also assessment of design research projects and innovations in the field of environmental technology.

The official award ceremony will be held on September 26, 2009 after the annual international design conference of the IDSA in Miami.

Just a few weeks after its market launch, the Roadster has now received the 2009 International Design Excellence Award (IDEA). The award is presented annually by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), based in Dulles, Virginia. The BMW Z4 received the bronze award, thus continuing the success story of BMW Group vehicles in this competition. Since 2000, nine vehicles from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands have been recognized for their outstanding design.

An equally characteristic feature is the low seating position close to the rear axle. The resulting driving experience and the visual impression of the roadster thus provide a perfectly integrated and fascinating whole.  

For the first time, a BMW Roadster is fitted with a retractable hard top. The dual-section roof in aluminum lightweight construction also contributes to the harmonious design of the BMW Z4. When closed, the hard top provides a flowing, coupe-like roof line which highlights the car’s elegant look. When open, it is discreetly and harmoniously integrated into the flat rear.

BMW Offers Real-Time Fuel Prices, Weather and Bloomberg Stock Indices.

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey – June 30, 2009 … BMW has enriched its award winning BMW Search service to provide online access to up-to-date fuel prices, weather forecasts and major stock indices.  Now, whenever a driver or passenger wants to know the Dow Jones, S&P 500 or NASDAQ indices, BLOOMBERG provides the answer through BMW Search with constant updates on the control display.

With the introduction of Google Maps™ database search capability in September 2008, BMW became the first auto manufacturer in the USA to enable an online data connection within the vehicle, allowing customers to quickly find points of interest with just a keyword.

BMW Search will automatically identify the current location and destination of the vehicle and advise occupants of the closest gas stations and current prices at the pump. To help choose a station, results are displayed with details of address and distance, and route guidance may be started at the push of a menu option. The driver can view fuel prices at the vehicle’s current location and at the destination entered into the navigation system.

The new BMW Search weather service provides the latest forecast for the next three days and even provides weather advisories and warnings. Again, weather can be viewed for the vehicle’s current location and for the destination entered into the navigation system.

These new features will be available to new customers and existing subscribers when they purchase the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan on BMW Assist and BMW Navigation system-equipped 2009 and later Z4, 1 Series, 3 Series and 7 Series as well as 2010 and later 5 Series, 6 Series, M5, and M6, effective June 30, 2009.

With these enhancements to BMW Search, BMW reinforces its commitment to bring state-of-the-art technology and content to customers. This effort represents another building block in the robust BMW ConnectedDrive services portfolio.

About BMW Assist™:
BMW Assist provides the driver with services that enhance on-the-road security and convenience, for added peace of mind. The BMW Assist and Bluetooth® System is standard on all 5, 6 and 7 Series models, including the M5 and M6, and is included in the Premium Package or available as a stand-alone option on all other models. BMW includes the Safety Plan for 4 years at no additional cost. BMW is the only manufacturer that offers this duration of service as other manufacturers only include the first year. The BMW Assist Safety Plan is a subscription based service that is subject to certain limitations.

The vehicle equipment integrates GPS technology and hands-free wireless communication functions to deliver emergency and other services, accessed via buttons in the overhead console or menu options on the control display. The BMW Assist system transmits the location and vehicle information to the BMW Assist Response Center. A response specialist speaks with the vehicle occupants to coordinate dispatch, notify emergency contacts on file, and links BMW Roadside Assistance or emergency services as needed and/or requested. A severe accident will automatically activate the Automatic Collision Notification function.

The BMW Assist Safety Plan also includes Door Unlock and Stolen Vehicle Recovery services, which can save the driver time and money.  MyInfo allows users to send business listings and street addresses with associated phone numbers from the Internet, directly to their BMW. TeleService automatically notifies the BMW center when the vehicle needs service. A service advisor then proactively calls the customer to set up a convenient appointment.

BMW Assist subscribers can also enroll in the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan, available at a cost of $199 per year, to avail themselves of BMW Assist concierge services; from finding the lowest fuel price or a four star French restaurant in the area to information on flight arrival gates or times, as well as receiving directions, traffic and weather information.  On most models produced September 2006 and later, a selected destination and its phone number can be sent directly to the BMW Navigation system and the subscriber’s Bluetooth - linked mobile phone, after a push of the Concierge menu option. On most 2009 and later models equipped with the BMW Navigation system, BMW Search allows online access to stock indices, fuel prices and weather information and the Google Maps database inside the vehicle. The Convenience Plan also includes Critical Calling, a service that can connect the driver to a requested party via a response specialist in case the subscriber’s mobile phone is not in the vehicle or its battery is discharged.

Lastly, the BMW Assist system includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and phone connectivity with phonebook access and speech recognition for dialing by name or number via steering wheel controls or control display.
